The heroes in my historical romance novels tend to be crusty on the outside and soft inside like a potato baked in the coals of a campfire.
In my new e-book, TO HAVE AND TO HOLD, Buck maddux is gruff and rough, tough and tender. Hidden beneath his crusty attitude is marshmallow heart. He doesn't want to go visit the widow of the man who was the reason Buck had spent the past two years in prison for a crime he didn't commit. But a promise was a promise. The fun thing is that he isn't the only one in the story with a tough hide. Tempest Whitney greets him with a shotgun, and accuses him of being the reason her husband was killed after stealing an army payroll. Buck's temper boils. He leaves, intent on staying as far away from the widow as possible. Then he learns a despicable rancher is forcing her to marry him. Buck promised her dying husband more than just to visit her; he'd promised to make sure she and her two small children were all right. Being under the thumb of what Buck considered a low-down snake of a man wasn't what he call "all right." So, what did he do? Why, the only thing he could do--he broke up the wedding and claimed to be Tempest's dead husband. That's my kind of man.
